Are you sure it's a carburettor issue? Mij engine ran just like that when the points in the distribitor were worn out. It would also explain the backfire.

i am not sure what it is, i have put new points, a new distributor cap and rotor and new spark plug wires.but after reading another topic here i will be removing the distributor again and checking everything twice,im sure it has to be something simple ,it always is. still a new carburetor will be nice anyway! cheers!-gregory

I have a zenith and it works very well, you need to clean it by taking all jet's out and putting compressed air on it. there's nothing much that can go wrong with it. there's a small fuel filter in the carb itself aswell, at where the line comes on there's a brass nutt take it out there's a fine wiremesh filter in the nut iirc.

otherwise check wether your ignition is doing it's job correctly. idling is easy but making faster and more sparks is dificult so the problem could still be in there. what's the points in the distributor cap set at? is the advance working? just to be sure try a different capacitor and coil.

it should be running just fine, this can't be a big issue, just a B*t** to find the small ones.

Succes!! i took the bobine out and cleaned it ,set the points again and its running fine now! i wasnt entirely convinced it was the carburetor either,as you pointed out, it seems so simple in its design i couldnt figure out what could really go wrong with it! thank you all for your help i just drove it out to the cafe for lunch its fantastic!!

btw the oil leak from the crank pully oil seal is something almost everybody has had once.

i would be far more worried when my engine stopped leaking at all

update: the truck is running very well ,it turns out that the problem was that the adjusting collar, at the bottom of the distributor ,was not tightening enough to keep the distributor from moving and throwing off the timing. i replaced the 8mm nut and reset the timing and it runs very well now. i have since gone on to paint the van and have now just noticed that one of the front brake cylinders is leaking very badly. so i have gone back to the very first job i did,the brakes, soon i will be on the road,thanks again to geert and jeff and everyone here that helped me many thanks!

0,20 intake and 0,25 exhaust is better. Some people prefer 0,25/0,30 on LPG as the valves will have more time to cool down after combustion, but I don't think that's necessary. I always set the valves when the engine is warm. It should not make much of a difference.

i cant figure out why there is so much exhaust smoke coming from around the carburetor area? maybe its just from underneath but it really seems to be coming from the area of the head.

when he is running there is exhaust smoke from inside the valve cover that is seeping out the oil cap,what can this be?

First off: can you describe the amount of smoke coming from the cap? A little bit isn't really a problem.

If this didn't happen before adjusting the valves, I would suspect one of the outlet valves isn't closing.
Otherwise it could be a couple of other problems: one or more broken piston rings, or maybe a leaking head gasket.
And are the bolts of the cilinder head fastened with the correct torque?
